Privacy Policy for Group your tabs++
Group your tabs++ is a browser extension that helps users organize, search, and group browser tabs. This Privacy Policy explains what information the extension processes, how it is used, and when it may be shared.
Summary
- The extension processes tab and browsing data to provide tab grouping and search features.
- User-created group settings are stored in browser storage.
- If the optional AI classification feature is enabled by the user, the extension sends the website hostname and the user-selected language to OpenAI to classify the site.
- The extension does not sell personal information.
- The extension is not designed to collect or transmit page contents, form inputs, passwords, or payment information.
Information the extension processes
To group and search tabs, the extension processes:
- Open tab URLs
- Open tab titles
- Window and tab group metadata
- Browser history search results used by the shortcut-based tab search feature
This information is used locally in the browser to match tabs against user-defined grouping rules, create and reorder tab groups, search existing tabs, and suggest or open likely destinations from browser history.
User-provided settings and saved data
The extension stores:
- Group names, colors, order, and matching rules
- AI-generated categories and host mappings
- UI and behavior preferences
- The OpenAI API key entered by the user, if the AI feature is enabled
This data is stored using Chrome extension storage APIs, including chrome.storage.local and chrome.storage.sync. Because synced storage may synchronize data through the browser vendor's account infrastructure, users should only enable sync if they are comfortable doing so.
Optional AI classification feature
The AI classification feature is off unless enabled by the user.
If enabled, the extension sends the following data to OpenAI:
- The website hostname derived from the current tab URL
- The language selected by the user for category naming
- The user's OpenAI API key, used only to authenticate the request directly to OpenAI
The extension sends this data to https://api.openai.com/v1/chat/completions in order to obtain a short category label for the hostname so the tab can be grouped automatically. The extension is designed to send only the hostname for classification, not the full page content.
Use of data sent to OpenAI is also governed by OpenAI's terms and privacy documentation: https://openai.com/policies/privacy-policy.
Data sharing
The extension does not share data with the developer's own servers.
Data is shared only in these cases:
- With OpenAI, and only when the user enables the optional AI classification feature
- With Chrome or the browser provider when extension data is stored using synced browser storage
Data retention
Data stored by the extension remains in the user's browser storage until the user removes it, overwrites it, clears browser extension storage, disables sync, or uninstalls the extension. AI classification requests are sent only when needed for classification and only while the feature is enabled.
Data security
The extension is designed to minimize transmitted data and to operate primarily locally in the browser. However, no method of electronic storage or transmission is completely secure. Users are responsible for protecting their own OpenAI API key and should revoke or rotate it if they believe it has been exposed.
User choices and controls
- Use the extension without enabling AI classification
- Remove saved categories and AI-generated categories
- Remove or replace the stored OpenAI API key
- Uninstall the extension to stop all processing by the extension
- Clear extension storage through browser settings
Children
The extension is not directed to children under 13.
